What is the Gospel?
At Redemption Church, we are all about pointing people to the redemption and salvation that they can have through Jesus Christ. This good news of salvation is often called the Gospel. Unfortunately, there can be a lot of confusion regarding what the Gospel message actually is. Because the message of salvation is at stake, it is vital we understand this message as stated in God’s Word.
So, what exactly is the Gospel?
God the Creator
Who is God? While many people reject belief in God totally, many who do believe in God misunderstand Him greatly. He is not a disinterested higher being, an evil dictator, or a helpless deity who is unable to control his creation. Rather, God is the loving, sovereign, just, powerful, and holy Creator of all things.
Man the Sinner
Who are we? This question of personal identity perhaps results in more confusion than almost anything else in our modern age. Are we good, bad, neutral? If so, who decides? The Bible describes all human beings as being made in the image of God, but now separated from relationship with Him. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, all humans have inherited a corrupt and sinful nature that results in rebelling against and rejecting the true God.
Jesus the Savior
Who is Jesus? Was He a good moral teacher? A liar or a lunatic? The Bible reveals Jesus to be the Son of God who took on human flesh to live a perfect life, die as a sacrifice for the sin of man on the Cross, and then rise from the grave three days later. Jesus alone is qualified to provided salvation for sinners.
Response: Repentance & Faith
While Jesus accomplished salvation on behalf of sinners by dying on the Cross, that salvation must be applied to the life of the sinner by the Holy Spirit. Through God’s sovereign grace, He grants faith to sinners whereby they repent or turn from their sin and trust fully in Jesus Christ for their salvation! If you are reading this and have not trusted in Christ, why not confess your sin and believe in Him today?
While there are many great and biblical ways to summarize the Gospel, this is the overview we typically use at our church and one that is very easy to put to memory.
